This year, St Andrew’s Day (30 November) and Romania’s National Day (1 December) fall on a Monday and Tuesday, turning the last weekend of November into a four-night break. Spend it in an authentic Saxon village in the heart of Transylvania, far from the crowds: four nights in the restored Saxon houses of Cund, meals cooked on site, evenings by the bonfire and a festive St Andrew’s dinner.

We get ready for the holiday the village way: setting wheat to sprout, baking homemade bread and kürtőskalács, then rounding off the morning of 1 December with a long, unhurried brunch.

Day-by-day programme (indicative)

• Friday, 27 November: arrival, welcome drink, 3-course welcome dinner, bonfire
• Saturday, 28 November: breakfast, lunch, 3-course dinner; the rest of the day is yours for unhurried walks around Cund
• Sunday, 29 November: breakfast, lunch, 3-course dinner, bonfire on St Andrew’s Eve
• Monday, 30 November – St Andrew’s Day: breakfast, lunch, themed barbecue dinner with drinks included, DJ party, bonfire
• Tuesday, 1 December – National Day: breakfast and festive brunch, check-out
