Bran Castle is undoubtedly one of Romania’s most precious medieval monuments. Built in 1382 by the town’s inhabitants, the castle dominates its surroundings from atop a steep cliff, and cannot fail to impress visitors. Early in the 19th century, Irish author Bram Stoker penned his iconic horror story about Count Dracula – a fictional character based on the Romanian ruler Vlad Tepes. Although the novel is entirely a work of fiction, it is still fun to explore the place that served as a source of inspiration! The castle is incredibly beautiful, thanks to the preservation of its architecture and most of the furniture. You can even see the bed where the character "Dracula" would have slept... The castle’s location in an area of outstanding natural beauty affords the visitor sensational views from the yard and balconies. No wonder CNN included it on a list of the finest ten castles in the world in 2010. On the way back, we'll stop for a short stroll through the historical center of Braşov, perhaps with a visit to the Black Church, the largest Gothic cathedral between Vienna and Istanbul.
